About us
A workshop that supports hundreds of families
Jabal Bani Hamida, formerly known as Jordan Jewel Art & Mosaic, was established in 2008 in Madaba, about 35 km south of Amman.
The project began as a business. Over the years it took on a social purpose as well, and that purpose now comes first.
For some 2,500 years, generation after generation, mosaic makers in this region have handed down the knowledge, techniques and tools of their craft. Our artisans work in that tradition. They have also learned to welcome thousands of visitors of many nationalities with a few polite words and a smile, and with a simple message: they want to live with dignity from the work of their own hands.
That work is slow. A mosaic of 10 square feet takes 200 to 300 hours to complete, set piece by piece. So far we have made, sold and shipped more than 50,000 artworks to customers around the world, and the gallery now covers 15,000 square feet.
Today the project supports hundreds of families through the handwork of their sons and daughters, who work with us as freelance artisans. Most of them live with disabilities. The income helps their families give children a proper education, medical care and a decent standard of living.
